Join us as we explore the causes and effects of climate change in the Sierra Nevada landscape. This institute will accommodate teachers of upper-grade sciences by concentrating on the more advanced topics of climate change and experimental design.

After the success of our 2009 pilot program, we are excited to offer this course again with even more activities incorporating the latest scientific research. Two encore days are now included to help you incorporate institute materials into your curricula.

This institute will take place at the Jack L. Boyd Outdoor School (near Yosemite). There we will explore the Sierra Nevada and focus on climate change's influence on natural systems. As a participating teacher, you will work with other participants to develop your own field investigations. You will learn how climate change has already affected the Sierra Nevada, and how mitigation might reduce that impact in the future.

Our Encore consists of two follow-up dates giving you more support for incorporating materials from the institute into your curricula or field investigation. At the second meeting, you will present your climate change curriculum and/or field investigation to the rest of the group so that we can learn from everyone's experiences.

The California Institute for Biodiversity is excited to partner with the California State Parks, visiting researchers currently studying the effects of climate change on local ecosystems, and expert Sierra naturalist David Lukas (author of the Sierra Nevada Natural History, Revised Edition), for this institute.

This intensive course will integrate California science content standards for 6th through 12th grade. Teachers will receive a teacher manual, an interactive CD-ROM, and other curricular materials. Housing and meals are provided. Academic units are also available.

Registration is closed.
