Do you ever find that in this busy world it is hard to get your students to stop and carefully observe the things that are around them? With field journaling, you'll learn how to ensure that students stop and focus on their observations through accurate sketching.
Naturalist, author, and artist John Muir (Jack) Laws will give you the tools to teach journaling to your students over a weekend in the majestic Sierra Nevada National Forest. We will focus on improving observational skills, asking scientific questions, and exploring nature through journaling. Each journaling exercise also comes paired with a language arts activity that will help you fulfill California standards in both science and English-language arts for 4th through 8th grades. Participants who complete this course will receive a detailed teacher guide and experience through the creation of your own field journal, so that you can successfully integrate this practice into your classroom. Our goal is to help you get your students to stop and observe, question, and ultimately connect with the natural world that surrounds them, whether that be in a state park or their schoolyard.
Schedule
Friday, August 3rd: 12pm - 9pm
Saturday, August 4th: 8am - 8pm
Sunday, August 5th: 8am - 2pm

Location
We will be staying at the Jack L. Boyd Outdoor School at Green Meadows near Fish Camp, CA. On Friday, we will meet at the Fish Camp General Store at noon for registration because the exit for Jack L. Boyd Outdoor School is easy to miss. We will then caravan to the school around 12:55pm. Please use these driving directions because online maps tend to send you on dirt roads where your car could get stuck. We encourage carpooling, and will send out an e-mail list for that purpose closer to the date of the workshop.
Housing & Meals
Housing and meals are provided in the registration fee. The housing consists of bunk beds set up in cabins. We try our best to split people up equally and with enough space so that you can be comfortable. If you are worried about snoring, we suggest that you bring earplugs. Camping outside on the school grounds is not allowed.
Meals are offered everyday in Jack L. Boyd's dinning hall. On Friday, we are only providing dinner so please eat lunch BEFORE you arrive. Saturday there will be a bag lunch provided for the hike. If you have any special dietary restrictions, we recommend that you bring your own food. Vegetarian meal options will be provided. If you bring your own food, you are not allowed to keep that food in your cabin. You must store food in the cafeteria.
Cell phone coverage at Jack L. Boyd Outdoor School is very limited. There is a pay phone on the campus if you need to make any calls.

Supplies
We will be providing you with the following:
- Your own field journal
- A teacher guide with journaling and language arts exercises
- A mechanical pencil and a blue art pencil
We ask that you bring:
- A backpack/daypack large enough to fit the items you bring as well as the supplies we are providing
- A reusable water bottle
- Comfortable hiking shoes
- Sun screen
- Camera & binoculars (if you have them; we will have several sets of binoculars to share if you do not have your own)
- Pillow and bed linens or a sleeping bag
- Toiletries and towels
- Any musical instruments you might like to entertain the group with by the campfire - optional, of course!
Be prepared for a range of temperatures. Sierra Nevada summers can be very warm in the day, cooling at night.
Hiking
We will be at an elevation of 5,000 feet, walking and hiking a considerable amount of time each day. Walking at least 20 minutes per day now will make hiking at that altitude easier and your experience more enjoyable. Break in your shoes before you get there!
