Sierra Nevada Teacher Institute 2009
Climate Change and Field Investigations

June 19-21, 2009
June 26-28, 2009
Two weekends:
Friday through Sunday
Join us as we explore the Sierra Nevada landscape in the Yosemite region while learning to incorporate scientific investigations, stimulating inquiry-
based activities, and multimedia curricula in your upper-grade science classroom!
After the success of our 2008 pilot Sierra institute, we are conducting not one, but two teacher institutes in the Sierras for the 2009 summer. Moving beyond our 2008 instructional design, this program will accommodate teachers of upper-grade sciences by concentrating on the more advanced topics of climate change and experimental design.
This institute will take place at the Jack L. Boyd Outdoor School (Fish Camp, CA). From there, we will explore the Sierra Nevada, focusing on effects of climate change on natural systems, and refining our skills in experimental design. As a participating teacher, you will work with other participants to develop your own field investigations. You will learn about this spectacular mountain range, its significance for all Californians, how climate change and human activity have already affected the Sierra, and how mitigation might reduce that impact in the future.
The California Institute for Biodiversity is excited to partner with the California State Parks and work with several prominent scientists, including expert Sierra naturalist David Lukas (author of the Sierra Nevada Natural History, Revised Edition), for this professional development institute.
This intensive course will integrate California science content standards for 6th through 12th grade. Teachers will receive a teacher manual, an interactive CD-ROM, and other curricular materials. Housing and meals are provided. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are also available.
Registration is closed!
